Q: What is Green?
A: Sustainable, or “green” building is the set of design and construction practices that provide healthy places to live and work while reducing negative impacts to occupants and the environment. Why build green? Designing to use less material and to minimize waste reduces material costs, saving money for homeowners and contractors. Using salvaged, recycled, and remanufactured products helps the environment, while local manufacturers and suppliers support the regional economy. Innovative deconstruction practices divert waste from landfills, and can reduce costs to building owners through tax incentives and reduced material requirements.
Q: Who should purchase an educational display?
To date, all displays have been developed for city and county community development departments, planning and building departments, and waste management authorities. But displays may also be useful to building owners who want to educate the public about the green features incorporated into their building.

Q: How does the order process work?
The first step is to review the order form, as it list all the options you will consider, and read the Why Build Green? booklet for an overview of each material or system. You can always call or email me with any questions about the options available. I am happy to talk it through and give advice about which materials might be best to include, but if you and your staff are already knowledgeable about green building, you may choose to make those selections.
Once I have received your completed order form, I will provide a written quote and submit a request for deposit. A 50% down payment is required to start the job and get on the production schedule. After receiving the deposit, we begin the work in earnest. The remaining balance is due at delivery.
Q: What if I want to include a material that is not on the order form?
A: Customization is available if you want to add materials that we have not already developed. Additional fees will apply (See order form for pricing).

Q: The display dimensions are not right for our space. What can be done?
A: The displays are hand made to specifications, so just contact me and we'll work out a customized design for you.
Q: How long does it take to receive my custom display?
This depends on several factors, but typically 8 weeks from the time a down payment is received.
Q: Is the booklet printed on recycled paper?
A: That is up to you, as the booklet is delivered only in electronic format (pdf), if you request it. It is up to you to post online or print for your clients. Information on ALL of the available materials is included in the booklet. If you want the booklet with only the materials that are mounted on your kiosk, graphic design charges will apply.

Q: Who holds the copyright for the design and information included in the kiosk?
A: All the content of the kiosk was developed under contract for, and is held by Ecology Action.
Q: Can I order a display directly from Ecology Action?
A: No. Since Ecology Action's Green Building pilot program was jettisoned, Jenny Shelton, an original member of the project team, continues to produce the displays. All contracts are with Jenny Shelton.

Q: How were the displays developed?
A: In the winter of 2002, two Green Building consultants from Ecology Acton, a Santa Cruz non-profit organization, proposed an educational program to help encourage waste reduction and spread information about green building in Santa Cruz County, CA. The project took the form of Green Building Kiosks displaying and outlining 32 green materials and methods. The kiosks were stocked with an original 40-page booklet expanding on the ideas presented. A web site was also created, providing the virtual content in an easily accessible format. The project took approximately $30,000 in waste-reduction grant funds, and two years to complete, from time of inception to installation of the first kiosks and print run of booklets. Since completion of the project, additional quantities have been produced for other organizations in California, and it is assumed that the project will continue to evolve and spread as other jurisdictions bring kiosks into their own community in the future.
