Community Advocacy:  2007-2008 Co-chair for the Monterey Bay Committee of the USGBC;  past member of Building Green Network Steering Committee;  member - USGBC Northern California Chapter.

Green features at our house: Bosch Energy Star+ DW; Earthen Plaster; FSC Certified cabinetry, doors, and millwork; recycled content tile countertops; low-VOC finishes; salvaged tile; cellulose wallcoverings; high-efficiency washer and dryer; dual-flush WC; 3kW solar PV array and grid-tied inverter; denim insulation; fiberglass windows; fiber-cement shingles and siding; lighting, art, metal railings, and cabinetry by local artisans; reused/vintage furnishings; recycling bins; whole house, non-electric water purification and softening system.

Not-so-Green features at our house: Original woodburning masonry fireplace, c.1971; nailed-down, non-certified prefinished maple hardwood flooring; 40-gallon natural gas WH c.1980; dusty heating ducts and ancient furnace; original blown-in fiberglass attic insulation.

Recent output of our PV array on an overcast day in March ’06: 1432 Watts.

On a rainy day: only 371 Watts.

But, our output on a sunny day: 3854 Watts.

Transportation: ’03 VW Jetta Wagon TDI, automatic transmission, running mostly on biodiesel. 

Favorite Pet Project: Green Building Kiosks and Booklets at area planning departments, funded by waste reduction grants from the City and County of Santa Cruz, Monterey Regional Waste Management District, Cities of Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, San Leandro, Long Beach, Palm Desert, El Cerrito and Menlo Park.
